Newberry College came into Illinois and landed one of the top available seniors in the state. This came from AJ Demirov of Crystal Lake South High School and the Fundamental U program.
Not only was Demirov one of the top available seniors in the state, but he is also one of the top point guards in Illinois. He earned himself second team all-state honors from the IBCA while leading Crystal Lake South to the sectional finals and winning a regional championship.
“I’m excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Newberry College in South Carolina. To the coaches at Newberry, thank you for believing in me,” Demirov wrote in his commitment post on Tuesday. Newberry had offered him a few months ago back in December. As well to the offer from the Wolves, he had also received a pair of offers from division one programs in Eastern Illinois and Incarnate Word as well to a division two offer from Lewis University.
Newberry College is a division two program and a member of the South Atlantic Conference. This past season they went 13-15. There could be an early opportunity for Demirov next season to get on the floor as Newberry will be losing their starting point guard Drew Robinson who is a graduate student.
