Cody Schmitz Talks NMU Commitment

One of Wisconsin’s top available seniors and state’s all-time leading scorers announced his commitment this week. Cody Schmitz of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School and the Wisconsin Blizzard program has committed to Northern Michigan.

In his senior season, Schmitz averaged a whopping 30.1 points along with 11 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.4 steals. He finished his high school career as Wisconsin’s fourth all-time leading scorer with 2,654 points.

“First and foremost, I love the coaching staff,” the 6’5” wing guard said about his decision. “Coach Matt has created a winning culture, along with a great team atmosphere. From what I’ve heard, the team really bonds together well and works hard. Peter Lattos, also from the Coulee Conference, being on the team was a big part in my decision as well.”

Schmitz was offered by Northern Michigan in June of last year which is also when he took his visit to the upper peninsula school. “Loved everything,” he said regarding the visit. “The facilities, school, and city in general were great. The coaches expressed their plan for me, and I really liked what I had to hear.”

“I’m looking to translate my versatility on offense to the next level as attacking the basket is my forte,” he said about moving his game to Northern Michigan. “In preparation for the freshman season, I am hoping to become more of an efficient three-point shooter and a great defender of the 2 and 3 positions.”

Northern Michigan is coming off a season in which they won 22 games and made it to the division two national tournament. The Wildcats have continued to recruit the state of Wisconsin extremely well and that continued in this 2024 recruiting class. Along with Schmitz, fellow prep players from Wisconsin and the NY2LA Association in the 2024 class include Isaiah Allen of Milwaukee Lutheran and Michael McNabb of Grafton.
