Commitment season continues as one of the top seniors from Michigan announced their college plans this week. This came from Alex Armstrong, a 6’6” wing of Hudsonville High School and West Michigan Premier. The senior announced his commitment to Southern Illinois University of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Over the course of 2026, there have been few players in the entire Midwest region who have seen their recruitment grow as much as Armstrong did. In his junior season, the wing was not on the radar of division one programs and instead was seeing his offers coming from NAIA and division three programs during the months of December and January. Then in early May, he saw his recruitment take a leap while earning his first offer from a division two program. It was not until June when his recruitment took its next major leap with Armstrong receiving his first division one offer, which came from Boston University. Then over the course of the summer, he became one of the most popular mid-major targets in the region with a lengthy list of offers from division one programs. This included offers also coming from Canisius, Colgate, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Stonehill, and UIC. Southern Illinois had offered him during this run of offers doing so in June. He then took his visit to Southern Illinois in August.

Southern Illinois is landing one of the more versatile players in Michigan’s 2027 class. As well as being an athletic 6’6” wing, Armstrong has greatly developed his offensive skills over the past year. This included his ability to handle the ball and make plays off the dribble as well to his shot creation.

Armstrong marks the first commitment for head coach Scott Nagy and Southern Illinois 2027 recruiting class. The Salukis are coming off a season in which they went 16-16.
