As the 2026 school year begins, Wayne State and head coach Bryan Smothers got a start on its 2027 recruiting class. This came from a commitment from Makai Campos, a 6’0” point guard of West Ottawa High School (MI) and WM Premier.

Campos made his announcement over the weekend selecting the in-state division two program. He chose the Detroit school over offers from a few other division two programs. He had also previously been offered by Ferris State, Hillsdale, and Saginaw Valley State.

The recruitment of Campos to Wayne State quickly came along over the summer. First in early June he went to their elite camp. Following their camp, he was then offered by Wayne State. Earlier this month prior to his commitment, Campos made his visit to Wayne State. “It was awesome, just seeing everything was really cool and I felt good about it and could see myself fitting in there,” he said about the visit.

“I like how it’s in the city and the campus is amazing. They have a really good business school which is what I want to major in, and the diversity of the school as a whole,” Campos said about why he selected Wayne State. On his future of playing for them, he said “I feel like I fit in really well with how they play, especially the speed at which the play. The style is really similar to my high school team.”
