Standouts, stock boosters, and now onto the ones to watch from this past weekend’s Grassroots Invitational tournament.
Tayte Cordova – 2027 – G – GPA
Over the course of the tournament, Cordova averaged 14 points. The skilled combo guard did much of his scoring with his shot making. Whether it was from three or off the dribble in the mid-range, the 6’2” guard can really shoot the basketball. The versatile guard also played smart with the ball in his hands while running the point. He also consistently played with great energy making plenty of plays including on the defensive side forcing turnovers. This included a transition basket, followed by a deflection that led to a steal, and then a basket inside all in just a few seconds to tie a game up in the final minute of play.
Grant Federer – 2027 – G – Gxfted Elite
The pure shooting ability of Federer that was shown throughout the spring season continued into this tournament. That led him to have one of the top scoring games of the tournament going for 30 points in a win as part of a 3-1 tournament. He moves well without the ball and is always ready to shoot off the catch hitting his shots at a high percentage. With the ball in his hands Federer continues to grow as a player with not just hitting shots off the dribble but improved handles and ability to be a facilitator with some nice drive and kick outs.
Ronnel Johnson – 2027 – PG – Team Ramey
Over the course of multiple games, Johnson showcased his playmaking abilities on both ends. He is an energetic guard who plays with good defensive intensity both pressuring the ball and getting into the passing lanes with his quickness. With the ball, he was consistently beating his man off the dribble with his burst of quickness. On the attack, Johnson passed it well finding shooters or dumping it off as well as being able to finish through contact. Though he was also effective off the ball hitting threes at a high percentage spotting up.
Origin Prewitt – 2027 – PG – All Wisconsin
It was another tournament where Prewitt shined with his point guard abilities. Not only does he excel as a playmaker consistently getting into the defense but also stood out on the other end with his play defending the ball. He plays strong with the ball in his hands maneuvering through the defense, while changing speeds effectively, to create for himself and teammates. He shot the ball well in the mid-range hitting a pair of pull up jumpers in his opening game in addition to finishing well at the basket at his size. On the attack, he continued to show his good ability to read the floor and decision making.
Danny Simon – 2027 – F/C – Full Package McCormick
Even while being 6’7” with a solid build, Simon was one of the top passers of the event. Whether he was working out of the low or high post, or out on the perimeter the post was making great passes while being a quick decision maker seeing the floor and hitting cutters or open shooters to rack up the assists. As well to his passing ability, Simon plays with good energy running the floor, rebounding in traffic, and defending the paint.
