While still a few months away from high school, there were plenty of standouts at the 14U level of the Generation Next Invitational this past weekend at Homestead High School. Here is the first group from that level.
Jarrel Ayed – PG – H-A-L Elite
Ayed was a big piece of his teams run all the way to the championship game. This included scoring 20 points in a tight four-point win on Saturday. This included a pair of big three’s down the stretch of that game. Much more than a shooter, he is a playmaker on the attack often getting two feet into the paint with his shiftiness and tight handle. Ayed also defends the ball well his quickness being tough to beat off the dribble.
Malaki Breitenfeldt – G/F – ABC Young Lions
After his high level of play last year at the NY2LA Championship’s, Breitenfeldt continued to do so here. Now his height has shot all the way up to 6’6” but he also showed perimeter skills handling the ball well. With this he was able to have one of the top scoring games of the tournament with a 25-point game showing his ability to drive to the basket, finish at a high percentage at the basket, and also hit shots.
Cooper Heck – G/F – Wisconsin Legends
Heck got off the tournament to a big start scoring a very quick 9 points in his team’s first game to open it up 11-0 in a dominant win. He kept on playing well from there including a team high 14 points in a win to advance them into the semifinals. He has some positional size already along with a highly versatile game to be able to do a bit of everything. Heck can score it as a strong straight-line driver, posting up, and spotting up for threes. He also plays with great defensive intensity both defending the ball and in help.
Jacob Filut – SF – Foundation Gold
Filut was a standout in multiple wins in this tournament. This was highlighted in a tight win Saturday with not just his scoring ability but his defensive play and rebounding. The wing forward has some size at 6’2” along with strength and plenty of toughness. He scored it well both aggressively attacking the basket with his physical play as well as posting up but can also spot up and hit the three. Filut was one of the better rebounders at the 14U level with all of his physical tools along with tough style of play.
Liam McCrae – G – 24UP
McCrae had one of the top shooting performances of the tournament. In a tight quarterfinal’s matchup, the guard drilled five threes to score a total of 20 points. He moves extremely well off the ball finding space to hit his shots. As well to his knockdown shooting from the outside McCrae also showed the ability to handle the ball well and run the point. The guard can also defend the ball well including blocking a shot while guarding the ball.
Geremiah Williams – PG – Team Herro National
Williams showed great playmaking ability moving so well with the ball in his hands. This helped him score 11 points in just the second half of his opening game. He shoots it very well off the dribble both from the mid-range and the outside hitting a pair of threes in the game while also finishing well through contact at the basket.
Isaac Zarate – G – Davis Brothers Elite
Zarate had multiple standout games during the tournament in helping Davis Brothers take the 14U championship. This started in his opening game on Friday where he scored 26 points. To put the championship win away, he scored 13 points in the second half alone. Zarate is a lengthy guard with a versatile scoring ability. He consistently shot the three at a high percentage but also scored it well getting all the way to the basket where he finished it well. This is in addition to being an active defends who plays well on guarding the ball.
