Iowa State and head coach TJ Otzelberger have continued to recruit the state of Wisconsin extremely well in recent years. To add to their 2027 recruitment class, they landed another commitment from Wisconsin.
This newest commitment came from Donovan Davis, a 6’8” forward of Freedom High School and Team Herro. Davis made his commitment at his high school Wednesday evening. “After some deep consideration with my family, I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at Iowa State,” Davis announced at his school in front of a large crowd.
Iowa State was able to beat out the other finalist of Iowa, Marquette, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. He had also been previously offered by Cal, Colorado State, and Syracuse. Iowa State had initially offered him back in the fall of 2024.
During both his sophomore and junior seasons at Freedom, Davis has earned all-state honors from the WBCA. In his junior season, he averaged 21.7 points, 12 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 2.3 steals. Last year on the EYBL with Team Herro, he averaged 12.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1 block per game. Iowa State is landing one of the most skilled and versatile forwards in the nations 2027 class. Not only does Davis stand at 6’8” but has an incredibly well-rounded skill set.
This is a major addition for Otzelberger and the Iowa State program. Davis is one of the highest ranked commitments in the history of Iowa State basketball. He is ranked as high as 32nd nationally by Rivals as well as 41st by 247. Davis marks the second commitment in the Cyclones 2027 recruitment class. He joins Josiah Harrington, a 6’5” wing guard of North Scott High School (IA).
Davis joins a run of top recruits from the state of Wisconsin to join the Cyclones. This includes the top ranked player in the current senior class in guard Yusef Gray, the top ranked recruit in Wisconsin’s 2026 class. Others over the past few years include Jamarion Batemon, Leon Bond, Tyrese Hunter, Xzavion Mitchell, and Milan Momcilovic.
