The Grassroots Showcase wrapped up Sunday with a big day of hoops at the Kentucky Expo Center. Here are a few of the day’s standouts with plenty more coverage to follow from the tournament.
Zayne Henderson – 2029 – PG – Erie Ice
Even while playing up a level, Henderson was one of the top scorers of the day on Sunday. This was with a 24-point game in a tight five-point victory. Not only did Henderson show very good playmaking ability with the ball in his hands, but also caught fire with his shooting. In the win, he drilled six threes. Throughout the win, whenever his team needed a basket or a play, Henderson consistently came through.
Jayden Phillips – 2027 – PG – Power 5 Brelove
Phillips was a key piece leading Power 5 to a tight, 5-point win. As well to leading them in scoring with 15 points, he also made plenty of other plays. This included his ability to play on the attack and distribute the ball with his quickness. He also used his speed and energy on the defensive side playing tough on ball defense, forcing multiple turnovers in the game and consistently disrupting the opposing offense.
Paul Ridgway – 2027 – SF – DistinXion
Ridgway had multiple standout performances at the Grassroots Showcase, and this included his play on Sunday. The 6’6” wing held led a comeback from once down double digits to then win by ten. He scored 24 points in the win including 14 points in the second half. Not only was he key with his scoring in this performance but also made some key plays defensively and on the glass. Ridgway is a must-see prospect in Indiana’s 2027 class with tremendous upside.
Troi Watkins – 2029 – PG – Ohio Saints
In the final game of the tournament, Watkins put on a show to lead the Ohio Saints to a tight win. While he had a very good first half with 9 points, he turned his game up a level in the second half as he came out of the halftime on fire scoring the basketball. Whether it was with a step back three, steals, getting to the rim, mid-range pullups, Watkins was making a ton of plays leading the Saints to the win.
Wesley Zenon – 2027 – SG – 3D Empire
17U 3D Empire had plenty of standouts throughout their 3-1 weekend and on Sunday it was Wesley Zenon getting it done in a one-point overtime victory in their showcase game. The 6’4” guard led the way scoring 19 points in the win as well to making key plays down the stretch. He played very aggressive on the attack using his size and physicality to get to the basket and finish but also knocked down two threes in the win. There is much to like from his game with his positional size, scoring ability, and well-rounded game.
