The Kentucky Expo Center was electric throughout the day with nearly 30 courts of hoops. With all the great action, here are just a few of the players who stood out on the day.
Nasir Avery – 2027 – G – Team Herro National
In his opening game of the day, Avery lit up the scoreboard for 25 points leading Herro to a win and helped them to another win in their second game with his all-around play as they move to 3-0 to win their pool. He got off to a quick start scoring 9 points in the first 10 minutes of action in his opening game and kept on scoring from there as a versatile scorer. Much more than just a scorer, he plays with great energy helping him make plays defensively and on the glass.
Nathan Freiheit – 2027 – C – PAC Elite
Freiheit played the hero role in a win today for PAC Elite. This was with a put back basket in a ton of traffic right before the final buzzer for the win. As well to his game winner, Freiheit holds a ton of upside. He has great size as a seven-footer but also is a mobile big man. The lefty also showed good touch finishing around the basket and can step out and shoot the three.
Calvin Gilbert – 2029 – PF – 3D Empire
Gilbert has proved to be one of the top 2029 players of the entire tournament. He shined in a dominant win for 3D where he led the way scoring 31 points. The forward stands at 6’7” plus plays with great energy, athleticism, and skill. His play was highlighted Saturday with multiple dunks but also showed the ability to handle the ball and score it strong inside along with some good footwork.
Jensen LePla – 2027 – SG – D Rice
Another appearance of LePla on this list as gain on day two of the Grassroots Showcase he starred. In his two games on Saturday, he scored with 25 points in a double overtime win and then 21 points including the game winning free throw in the final seconds in his second game. LePla has developed into a consistent knockdown shooter which included hitting four threes in a single half today and three threes in another half today.
Kenny Turner – 2028 – PG – 3D Empire
The point guard had one of the more impressive scoring performances of the day. This was with a 22-point game in a one point game. He plays with great energy and toughness as well to being a skilled scorer getting it done in a variety of ways. Turner plays quick with the ball getting into the paint and finished it strong for his size inside as well to hitting a few jumpers from both the mid-range and three.
