At the 14U level of the NY2LA Swish N’ Dish there was a lengthy list of highly quality teams leading to some great action. Here are the five who stood out the most.
Justin Cato – 2030 – G – Power 5
This Power 5 14U team was dominant at Swish N’ Dish in winning the platinum championship and Cato was a big reason for this. The guard was one of the top scorers at this 14U level. In the quarterfinals he scored 19 points in a single half and 24 total in the game. Then in the championship, Cato once again led them with 19 points in the title win including 12 points in the first half to build a significant lead. Cato already has great positional size at 6’3” in addition to an advanced skill set. He’s a skilled playmaker with the ball who can run the point and excels getting into the paint. Not only does he finish it strong at the basket utilizing his size but also shot it well from three with good range. There are few eight graders with all his tools
Brock Weeden – 2030 – G – Wisconsin Academy
The great versatility and impactful play of Weeden helped Wisconsin Academy advance to the semifinals. Even at his young age, there isn’t much Weeden cannot do on the floor. He has some size as a big 6’2” guard, plus good length, feel, toughness, and an advanced game. His skill set includes being be a primary ball handler, a skilled facilitator with a good passing ability, playing big on the glass, and score it very effectively getting into the paint. Weeden showed he can really do whatever his team needed of him.
Keegan Krull – 2030 – PG – Davis Brothers Elite
After a stellar season last year with Davis Brothers Elite, Krull is continuing to play at a high level and progressing again this year with them. He had a few big games at Swish N’ Dish helping his team advance all the way to the championship game with a few impressive wins. Not only can Krull score the ball in bunches but also has a very well-rounded game. Krull shoots it well from three but also moves well with the ball getting all the way to the basket. He is smart guard with the ball and sees the floor well and knowing where to go with it creating for others.
Keion Bellfield – 2030 – PG – More Than Hoops
Bellfield was one of the top two-way guards at the 14U level. As well to scoring 16 points in a quarterfinals game versus the eventual champions, the point guard also showed his ability to be a disruptive defender. Bellfield showed a good ability to create for himself off the dribble, doing so all around the paint as well to hitting shots off the dribble from three at a high percentage. He is an athletic point guard who sticks well with the ball forcing turnovers as well to blocking shots on his man.
Braylin Calhoun – 2031 – G/F – Power 5
Even while playing up a level as a 2031, Calhoun is a highly impactful player with everything he can do but shows even greater upside. He has tools you rarely see at his age as a fluid athlete with good size and length on the wings at 6’4”. Not only did Calhoun shoot it well spotting up from three, but he also threw down several dunks in the tournament with his great explosiveness. this was in addition to being one of the top and more versatile defenders at the 14U level. He was a huge piece in Power 5’s championship including scoring 15 points in the title win in addition to being a standout throughout the tournament.
