While many seniors have been making their college commitments over the past month, there has also been a couple of them doing the opposite. Over just the past couple of days, one of the top seniors from both Illinois and Wisconsin opened up their recruitment.
This started on Sunday with Danny Houlihan opening his commitment from High Point. This comes after he made his commitment back in September. Before his commitment, he had also been offered by LIU, Western Illinois, and Western Michigan. In his senior season at New Trier, the 6’5” wing guard received all-state special mention honors while averaging 17 points and 4 rebounds. He also set a school record with 95 made threes during the season. Houlihan played with the Meanstreets program.
The next one came from Zavier Zens who asked for his release from Northern Iowa. This follows longtime Northern Iowa head coach, Ben Jacobson, making the move from Northern Iowa to Utah State. Zens has been one of the most accomplished players in Wisconsin in recent years. This included winning three straight state titles with Wisconsin Lutheran, including an undefeated senior season at 30-0. He averaged 23.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.4 assists this season to be named Wisconsin Mr. Basketball. Before he committed last summer, Zens had received offers from Bradley, Buffalo, Colorado State, Illinois State, Miami (OH), Wyoming, and others.
With Zens now available, look for him to draw interest from high major programs. The duo of Zens and Houlihan are now two of the highest rated available seniors in the Midwest.
