While there were several breakout stars on the NY2LA Association this summer, Malachi Johnson may have been the biggest from the 2024 class. Between the two live period tournaments, Summer Jam and The Final Chapter, the 6’2” point guard continued to play at a high level leading Greater Purpose Athletics to plenty of success.
At the Summer Jam tournament in Ohio, Johnson helped Greater Purpose Athletics have a tremendous tournament to advance all the way to the gold bracket championship game and finish with a 7-1 record. To follow that up Johnson helped his deep team have another successful weekend at The Final Chapter the week after finishing with a 5-2 record. While Johnson is a well-rounded point guard, he excelled with his scoring during The Final Chapter consistently scoring the ball at a high rate including games of 27, 22, 19, and 18 points.
With his play, his recruitment interest has continued to build with schools of all levels showing interest in him. Some of these programs include Bowling Green, DePauw, Eastern Illinois, Elizabeth City State, Grand Valley State, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Missouri S&T, St. Leo, St. Norbert, Wayne State, Winona State, UIC, among plenty of others. He is planning on taking a visit to Elizabeth City State, a division two in North Carolina, the first weekend of August. He is also looking to visit a few of these other programs in the near future.
“Do it all guard who can help win in more ways than one,” is how Johnson first described his own game. “I can rebound, score when needed, get my teammates in the right spots to score and flourish, I’m a vocal leader and a willing defender.”
Johnson should be a popular target this upcoming high school season at Rockford Guilford for his senior season.
