After a highly impressive start to the spring grassroots season, Nino Smith received his first scholarship offer. The offer for the 6’0” point guard of De La Salle High School and the Michigan Playmakers was from Wayne State University. The offer comes after the coaching staff being in touch with him for the past year.

Over the course of the first live period at the NY2LA Spring Extravaganza in Indianapolis, Smith was one of the top guards of the tournament. He is a pure point guard that excels distributing the basketball. With his quickness and vision Smith has great playmaking ability and command of a team’s offense. The junior describes himself as a pass first point guard who can also score plus loves to defend.

“It was an unreal feeling to hear the head coach say they would want me to play at their program and I’m extremely blessed,” Smith said about getting his first offer.

While Wayne State is the only offer, there are plenty of other programs showing interest in him from multiple levels. Grand Valley State, Indiana Wesleyan, Lake Superior State, Miami (OH), Princeton, Southern Indiana, Toledo, Western Michigan, Youngstown State, are amongst the long list of suitors.

Following the offer, Smith will be taking a visit to the Wayne State campus upcoming on May 3rd. “I’m really excited to get with the coaching staff and view their campus.”
