One of the most intriguing prospects in the Grassroots Championships in Orlando this past summer was 2022 F Daniel Sanford. The 6’8 prospect out of Charlotte, did not need much time to show that he was a high major talent that impacts the game on both sides of the floor and is the ultimate competitor. He is just starting to scratch the surface in terms of his long-term potential and is not wasting anytime to cease the moment.
Offensively, Sanford seems to be a man playing amongst boys. Physically he is almost impossible to guard one and one and commands constant double teams. He can score from various points on the floor and even developed the ability to knock down the three balls on a more consistent basis. He also brings with his game a crazy vertical which constantly makes opponents victims of his high-flying dunks. He has a natural feel around the basket and uses his upper body strength to finish at the rim with either hand. The focus last summer where he spent countless hours in the gym was developing his mid-range jumper which has set him from other players this summer.
Defensively he can guard almost any position on the floor at the high school level. He is quick enough to stay in front of guards on the perimeter and his size and athleticism allows him to go in the paint and guard bigger players in the post. His quick leaping ability allows him to block shots and set up teammates for easy transition plays and cause easy turnovers with deflections and steals by playing passing lanes. His ability to rebound the basketball is probably one his most prized attributes. He has a natural feel for the ball and is fundamentally sound in terms of boxing out and using his upper body strength to secure the ball. He is not turnover prone, and constantly is making plays on the court to make his team better each night. This past summer he saw coaches get a front seat at his games to get an opportunity to get him on campus.
This past travel season Sanford competed for the talented Team United group out of North Carolina which made it to the championship game of the Grassroots Basketball Association Circuit. He currently holds offers from the likes of Mercer, James Madison, Appalachian St, South Florida, Tennessee, and Charlotte. Also in the mix are Winthrop and Western Carolina to name a few. This list will only grow as he heads into his final year where we expect for him to continue his momentum in an upward trend.
