Saturday kicked off a great end of the summer scene as Camp Right Way, run by former NBA star John Lucas and his staff, got several young basketball players from around the midwest etc. into the gym to develop their skills and competitive spirits. Each kid put forth great efforts throughout the day and evening Saturday during drill sessions and organized play. Some players like Marquis Brown (Burr Ridge, IL), Antoine Davis (Houston, TX) Courtney Ramey (St. Louis, MO) and others, stood out as 7th and 8th graders to watch closely for entering high school over the next couple years. Here’s a look at some of the camp’s top performers and some notable players who also performed at a very high level in Chicago...
DAY 1 TOP PERFORMERS
CHASE ADAMS - 2018 - PG
5-0 - ARIEL ACADEMY - CHICAGO, IL
Adams was fun to watch as he gives it %100 every second he is on the floor. Not only does he hustle, he is as competitive as it gets and shows that fire in his approach, controlling the offense, attacking when he sees opportunities and using his quickness on both ends. Adams showed good handle with the ball and proved he can knock down the outside shot without sacrificing his form.
MARQUIS BROWN - 2018 - G
5-10 - ARIEL ACADEMY - BURR RIDGE, IL
Brown has good size and build already that fits more like a wing, but he has the skills to play either guard spot. He handled the ball well in drills and competition, constantly was attacking the rim, finished plays around the hoop and made good passes as well. Very athletic and explosive with solid defense too.
MATTHEW BROWN - 2019 - G
5-8 - ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC ACADEMY - KENOSHA, WI
Brown was impressive at Camp Right Way with his hustle and his constant offensive attack. Brown showed he can pretty much get to the hoop at will, but excels finishing in transition. His handles are strong, he is both fast and quick and can change games when he gets hot defensively.
XAVIER CASTANEDA - 2018 - SG
5-8 - INTER AMERICAN SCHOOL - CHICAGO, IL
Castaneda followed up an excellent showing at the Generation Next Camp with great effort and play at Camp Right Way. The young two-guard handles the ball well, can shoot it beyond the three-point line, finished well in transition and made the hustle plays all the time.
ANTOINE DAVIS - 2018 - PG
5-11 - HOMESCHOOL - HOUSTON, TX
Davis has a great frame and clear basketball intelligence when competing. The quick and smooth lead guard commanded the offense and defense with strong leadership qualities, and showed off his skill package as well... handling it well, making smart passes and displaying range with his jump shot. Davis also showed he can finish with either hand in traffic. Very controlled and fluid player already.
COURTNEY RAMEY - 2018 - PG
5-10 - WEBSTER GROVES M.S. - ST. LOUIS, MO
Ramey was Ramey again Saturday, doing a little bit of everything, particularly on the offensive end. Ramey has great handles and did an excellent job sharing the basketball and making his teammates better as point guards are supposed to do. He made plays with the ball going to the basket and controlled tempo. One of the more polished 8th graders there is and yet has a ton of room to keep improving.
KYLE RODE - 2019 - F
6-3 - LEXINGTON CHRISTIAN ACADEMY - LEXINGTON, KY
Rode wowed Saturday with a strong combination of skills, size and poise on the court. Only entering the 7th grade, Rode has excellent length and has great coordination. He ran the floor well, was very good handling the ball and showed shooting stroke that extends to the perimeter. Should be exciting to see where Rode can take his game as he continues to hone his skills and is likely to reach 6-6 or 6-7 by the time he is done growing.
AMARI SHERROD - 2018 - PF
6-3 - PIERCE M.S. - GARY, IN
Sherrod kept improving as the day progressed in drills Saturday and was even better in competition during the games. He is a strong and athletic young forward with a great frame that moves explosively. Sherrod finished well going to the hoop and played strong defense also.
TORRENCE WATSON - 2018 - F
6-0 - WHITFIELD M.S. - FLORISSANT, MO
Watson is another forward with great size and upside that continued to impress as the camp wore on. In drills, he hustled and showed developing tools. Though he is still raw, the pieces are in place and he showed he can be effective defensively with his length and crashing the boards, but also did a good job around the rim offensively.
JOE WIESKAMP - 2018 G/F
6-0 - WEST M.S. - MUSCATINE, IA
Wieskamp had a really strong showing Saturday working hard through every drill and showing toughness in the games. The blossoming wing showed he can shoot the mid-range jumper efficiently, attacked the rim well off the bounce and worked hard defensively grabbing rebounds and getting in passing lanes.
NOTABLES
DARRYL BROOKS JR. - 2019 PG
5-6 - BROOKFIELD ACADEMY - MENOMONEE FALLS, WI
The talented young lead guard impressed at times on Saturday. He handles the ball well, sees the floor well, and has the ability to attack off the bounce to create or score while showcasing a solid perimeter stroke at times as well. A solid young floor general on the rise.
DANIEL CAREY - 2018 - F
6-2 - PIERCE M.S. - CROWN POINT, IN
Carey displayed high-level type athleticism and a great motor. He played fast and hard up and down the court, grabbing rebounds on both ends of the floor and sprinted down court in transition. Carey attacked the rim hard and did a good job of finishing, including one he looked ready to dunk but made the right decision to lay it in off the glass for the sure basket instead.
TYLER HERRO - 2018 - G
5-9 - WHITNALL - GREENFIELD, WI
Herro is a terrific young combo guard with good size. He is a tremendous perimeter shooter, but is dangerous because of his ability to attack the lane and hit mid-range jumpers and floaters as well. He did a good job breaking down the defense at times Saturday and showed his defense is coming along as well.
A.J. GREEN - 2018 - G
5-8 - CEDAR FALLS M.S. - CEDAR FALLS, IA
Green is a tough young guard who can rotate either one or two. He showed quickness and grit in drills, attacked the hoop strong at times and knocked down some tough shots as well.
MESSIAH JONES - 2018 - PF
6-1 - SIMMONS M.S. - AURORA, IL
Jones stepped up at Camp Right Way and showed incredible shot blocking instincts. He is a very athletic forward and showed his toughness defensively, as well as displayed developing skills with the ball in his hands on offense. The pieces are there for him to transition to more of a small forward role if need be, but he plays hard and instinctively in the post already.
MUSA JALLOW - 2018 - PF
6-2 - BLOOMINGTON NORTH M.S. - BLOOMINGTON, IN
Jallow is raw but showed great control and effort throughout the day Saturday at camp. For his size he handles the ball alright, moves well and hustles and does a good job on the glass. Jallow clearly has room to grow, literally, and should be a post player to keep an eye on as he progresses over the next few years.
