Another day in the books and Championship Sunday is on the horizon, but Day 2 left its impression on the tournament with some great games and competitions, and some awesome “individual” efforts by young cagers playing hard. Darius Moore and Marquis Hicks teamed up to mount an improbable comeback, while Justin McMahon, Chase Thomas and Matthew Myers stroked the nets with fire from their hands. Others competed at a high level and were the driving forces for their teams, win or lose. Take a look at ten of the best performers from Saturday at the 2013 Generation Next Invitational Championships...
LUKE ANTHONY - 2017 - SG - IL SPEED
5-11 - WHEATON NORTH H.S. - WHEATON, IL
Anthony has a really solid outing in an early Saturday contest against Playground Elite-Brown. Anthony was a major asset on the glass, pushed the ball smartly up the court, hitting breaking teammates for easy scores a couple times, and then shot the lights out a bit spotting up around the three-point line. Anthony had 15 points, draining 3 triples and earning a couple easy ones in transition as well.
CHASE THOMAS - 2017 - G/F - FULL PACKAGE ELITE
6-2 - NEW TRIER H.S. - NORTHFIELD, IL
Thomas was electric from the field, spotting up from deep and splashing home shots. The skilled and intelligent wing positioned himself well around the hoop for rebounds, but his affect on the game came from his shooting. He knocked down 17 points in the game... 15 from downtown.
CALEB DONALDSON - 2018 - PG - ROCKFORD WILDCATS
5-4 - STEPHEN MACK M.S. - ROCKTON, IL
Donaldson had his foot on the pedal from the opening tip, getting his team off to a great start as he got stops on defense and converted them into points for his team either distributing or scoring. The promising young guard was able to dictate pace of the game with his speed and athleticism while attacking the rim. He finished the game with 19 points.
MARQUIS HICKS - 2017 - F/C - MILWAUKEE SPARTANS
6-2 - BRADLEY TECH - MILWAUKEE, WI
Hicks got off to a great start, imposing his will inside on the roll early. He cooled off in the middle of the game, but found a fire down the stretch to help his team mount an incredible comeback. Hicks scored 7 points in the final three minutes of regulation, including an unbelievable off-balance tip in to tie the game at the buzzer. He scored another basket in overtime and had 15 points total at the finish.
ISAAC LINDSEY - 2020 - SG - PLAYGROUND ELITE
5-5 - MINERAL POINT M.S. - MINERAL POINT, WI
Lindsey was phenomenal for the young Playground Elite squad in a couple games Saturday. Lindsey does not make many mistakes on the floor as he keeps under control and patient with the ball and anticipates plays extraordinarily within his team’s press. On the offensive side of the ball, Lindsey was deadly from the mid-range with a series of shots, ranging from a straight pull-up jumper to running tear-drops a la Tony Parker. Lindsey finished the early game with 13 points which also featured him draining a triple.
JUSTIN MCMAHON - 2017 - G - FULL PACKAGE ELITE
5-9 - LAKE FOREST H.S. - LAKE FOREST, IL
McMahon was really efficient from the floor and was a constant threat from the wing offensively. McMahon saw the court easily and had a great feel for when to pull up and can knock down the floater or regular jumper with accuracy while defended. The young combination guard also displayed talent from the perimeter with some nice shooting outside. He had a big game in double figures in an early round victory and then bounced back with an 18-point effort in a tough overtime loss later in the day.
DARIUS MOORE - 2017 - PG - MILWAUKEE SPARTANS
5-6 - MILWAUKEE RIVERSIDE H.S. - MILWAUKEE, WI
Moore had one of the premiere performances of the tournament with his efforts against Full Package. Trailing big late in the first half, Moore took his squad and willed them back in the game by sheer determination... and scoring. The compact south-paw hit trey’s, stole the ball pressing, cleaned up plays cutting to the hoop and finish and penetrating in order to hit nice arching floaters. Moore rallied the troops with his 25 points which his team used to earn the impressive come-from-behind victory.
MATTHEW MYERS - 2017 - G - WI SWING
5-8 - BARNEVELD H.S. - BARNEVELD, WI
Another smooth left-handed gunslinger, Myers was practically automatic from the field. The combo guard came off screens, used shot fakes and jab steps to create room for him to release his shots and also shared the leather a bit too. Myers wound up with 16 points off 4 three’s and a couple added baskets from within the arc.
JARVIS ROBERTS - 2018 - PG - PLAYGROUND ELITE
4-8 - RUFUS KING M.S. - MILWAUKEE, WI
Jarvis Roberts might be small right now, but the 2018 point guard brought some big game to the floor for Playground early Saturday. Roberts was breaking down defenders with ease and facilitating for teammates with good, quick decisions often. Also, Roberts proved he can score the basketball by getting to the paint and using his speedy feet to offset shot blockers coming over while he laid in several buckets.
DEASHAWN TURNER - 2019 - PG - FUTURE
5-5 - HAVEN M.S. - CHICAGO, IL
Turner was exceptional offensively for Future in an early game. The strong and quick guard used his handles and good first step to drive to the paint consistently where he went to work making plays. Turner was able to drop down several assists with his vision and strong passes in the half-court and other times made plays at the rim for the score. Later, Turner also showed his shooting range, knocking down a pair of three-pointers.
