Currently, Jaylan McElroy is one of the top available seniors in all of Illinois. The 6’7” forward of DePaul Prep and the Illinois Wolves has drawn interest from a number of division one programs.
To date, Illinois State and Loyola Maryland are the two schools to have extend an offer to the senior. There are a few other programs also showing some interest in him including Missouri State.
“I’m more of a team player than an individual player,” he said when describing his own game. “If I’m not scoring then I’m not going to feel defeated, I’m going to keep bringing the energy and rebounds. However, I can score from different areas of the court while my jump shot is improving. If I have a big on me, I can take him from the elbow or the mid-post. If I have a guard, I like to post them up getting them in foul trouble early. I have a versatile game.”
Last season as a junior, McElroy and DePaul Prep cruised to the Illinois 2A state championship. Once again, this season DePaul Prep ranks among the best teams in the entire state as they have a 17-1 record currently. McElroy has been a huge part of all this success while averaging 16 points and 9 rebounds per game. He was also recently named MVP of the deep Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic in leading his team to the championship title.
“My goal for this season is to keep proving people wrong. Everyone thinks we aren’t capable of doing certain things like making it downstate again,” he said about goals for the rest of the season. After McElroy finishes off his senior season, he is planning on playing once again with the Illinois Wolves this spring.
