5th Grade action was popping on Sunday, the final day at the GNBA Championships. Young ball players from the different conferences clashed one last day on the hardwood looking to take home some championships hardware. Kevin Miller led the Rising Stars to the 2014 GNBA 5th Grade Championship with his play while others also had huge days for their teams to help them in their successes. Here’s the recap of GNBA Championships Sunday with the top performers in the 5th grade division…

TOP PERFORMERS
KENDALL BROWN - 2021 - G - TOP FLIGHT

Brown had a strong tournament for Top Flight and had one of his better games in the final against the Rising Stars. Brown used his length and athleticism well throughout the game to grab some rebounds and score around the basket often. He finished the championship loss with 15 poits, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

DONTAY GOODWIN JR. - 2021 - G - SW ILLINOIS JETS
Goodwin Jr. got the day off to a good start personally, doing what he does best which is forcing turnovers for the other team and converting them to points on his team’s end. Goodwin got several lay-ups off steals, rebounded the ball hard and made plays for the Jets. He finished the early game with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 6 steals.

KEVIN MILLER - 2021 - G - IL RISING STARS
Miller was outstanding for the 5th Grade champion IL Rising Stars team. The young guard made plays on both ends of the floor and finished on offense really well, scoring 15 points, including sinking a nice three. He also converted both of his free throw attempts and had a couple rebounds, an assist and steal in the contest.

MARK MITCHELL - 2021 - G - KC POWERGROUP
Mitchell was sensational for KC PowerGroup all day long Sunday. The tough young off-guard was all over the boards in both of their games, and did an excellent job making shots and finishing lay-ins on the offensive end. The first game, Mitchell scored 15 points, sinking 7 free throws and tallying an impressive 17 rebounds. The second outing, Mitchell finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds in a championship loss.

CAMERON PALESSE - 2021 - G/F - RAY ALLEN SELECT
The young forward for Ray Allen Select had himself and awesome championship game on Sunday. The hard-working forward put up 12 points while also ripping down 13 rebounds in the title game, but he also was after it on the ball, getting a pair of steals and then made his only three-point attempt as well.

SAM VER STEEG - 2021 - PG - KINGDOM HOOPS ELITE
Ver Steeg had himself a game early on for Kingdom Hoops in their attempt to move on in the tourney. The young lead guard was outstanding from the field, draining a trio of triples for his team and ultimately going 9-16 from the field, which was good for 21 points.

RYAN RIGGS - 2021 - C - KINGDOM HOOPS ELITE
A tough post prospect for Kingdom Hoops had a really strong game to open the day for the Iowa based team. Getting in good position and clearing out, Riggs pulled down 14 rebounds for his team, 8 offensive which gave him some second chance points and also aided in his 2 assists on the day. He finished with 10 points in the game to go along with the rebounds.

ST. CYR THOMAS - 2021 - F - NEBRASKA HOOPS ELITE
Thomas had an excellent game the first go-round Sunday for Nebraska Hoops. The rangy forward sank a couple three’s going 2-4 from the outside, but also got in the mix on the boards, snagging 6 rebounds. He finished the game with 11 points as well.

PATRICK MCGINNIS - 2021 - PG - WI PLAYGROUND WARRIORS
The champion Playground Warriors got a good balanced contribution from several players, but McGinnis was one of the top performers overall for the team. In the first game of their day, he scored 11 points, hitting 1 three and contributed with 4 rebounds and 4 steals to boot. In the title game, he went 4-6 from the free throw line, hit a couple shots and finished with 12 points.

KOBE JOHNSON - 2021 - G - WI PLAYGROUND WARRIORS
Johnson is certainly one of the top players in the class as he does a lot of different things really well for his team. Helping the Warriors to the championship game, the tough young guard scored 9 points but shared it 5 times (assists) and had 4 steals along with a three in the semi-final. In a Gold title game though, Johnson upped his play even more and scored 13 points with 9 rebounds and 3 assists to lead the victory.
