In front of a crowd at his Niles North high school gym on Thursday evening, Aquan Smart dawned a navy hat and polo with a yellow “E” to signify his commitment to East Tennessee State and head coach Steve Forbes. The senior picked East Tennessee State over scholarship offers from Chicago State, Florida International, Illinois State, Southeast Missouri State, UAB, UIC, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Smart had a breakout year playing with his high school team and Pure Prep. The point guard is such an electric player with the ball in his hands. Does a great job penetrating the defense to create for himself and teammates at a high level. Able to get to the basket and finish often while he also possesses great vision to rack up the assist. Tricky to stick with plus can shoot it well off the dribble. Quality perimeter defender on the other end with his length and quickness.

After being overlooked for quite some time, this year was finally Smart’s time. All eight of his scholarship offers came in this year after the live period in April, starting with Southeast Missouri State. ETSU joined the party offering him just back in July. He will be joining a team next fall that has found some success over the last few years under Forbes. In each of the past four seasons the Buccaneers have had at least 24 wins each year, including 27 wins in the 2016-17 season that led to an NCAA tournament berth.

Look for Smart to be a quality piece in any future success for ETSU. He joins Cam Bryant, a 6’7” forward, of Dutchtown High School in Georgia as the other commitment in the Forbes 2020 class.
