Whitney Young H.S. (IL) has pumped out some outstanding basketball talent over the years, and they have another impressive prospect coming through the ranks currently in 2020 G Tyler Beard (Chicago, IL). Beard is a 6’0” 150-pound combo guard who continued to soar with his play throughout the past grassroots season competing with the Meanstreets program and will look to continue improving going into the coming year.

After what Beard says was a really fun summer playing with his guys in AAU, where he was able to pick up a number of offers and interest from some of the top programs in the country, the young guard out of Chicago has his eyes set on one main goal this year. That goal is to help his team win a state championship this season. For many, a goal like that may seem lofty, but Whitney Young is consistently looking to be in contention for just that, and Beard certainly possesses the talent to be a major factor in whether or not that can be accomplished.

“My strengths are playmaking, defending, scoring from all three levels and slashing,” Beard said of his skill-set right now. Beard plays physically stronger than someone might figure at first sight, and as a defender he is top notch with his quick hands, determination and ability to read opponents’ moves with anticipation. With a nice shot that he can sink off the dribble or off the catch, the 6-0 guard keeps opponents honest when defending him, and then he has enough burst to blow by them with precise moves down the lane. He is an excellent finisher when he gets to the rim as well and has good bounce with good body control in the air. As he commented, Beard is outstanding off the wing slashing through gaps in the defense or making the backdoor cut.

At the moment, Beard has earned himself offers from DePaul, South Florida (USF), Butler, Illinois-Chicago (UIC), Florida Atlantic, and West Virginia. He has also been receiving interest from major programs like Indiana, UCLA, Villanova, Valparaiso, Nebraska, Virginia, Maryland, Tulsa, Illinois, Michigan, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Missouri, Loyola, and Northwestern. So far, he has taken visits to Butler, Valparaiso and UIC, whom he commented about saying “I loved Butler and the brotherhood they convey with the team there, and Valpo was the same way… All of the players stick together and it’s a real nice family atmosphere.” For UIC, Beard added “It was good… I liked the campus and the staff, and it’s home so I definitely loved it.”

Illinois has a load of young talent coming up as usual, and Beard is a major player in that roster. Look for him to hit the courts with his Whitney Young teammates coming up this winter and you’re sure to get a good show from one of the top players in the region. It will be fun watching Beard grow throughout this season and seeing what he can do on the grassroots scene next season entering his final year.
