Player rankings can be the most exciting thing for some and the most toxic for others as a simple number next to a name can elevate the confidence of a prospect or deteriorate his attitude in the same sense.  That being said they have become an extremely “popular” aspect of the recruiting process over the years.  At the highest levels of high school there is a bit less risk of the negative, although much still remains, and for the most part it’s a solid guide on highly regarded prospects across the country.  While some land in current places on the board based off past and/or current production others may secure a position higher based off projected upsided in the coming years.  With that being said here’s a brief look at the top 10 in our NY2LASPORTS.COM updated Top 50 national player rankings for the 2017 class…

NY2LASPORTS.COM CLASS OF 2017 UPDATED TOP 10
1 – DEANDRE AYTON – C – HILLCREST ACADEMY (AZ) – CAL SUPREME
Verbally committed to Arizona, Ayton has long been regarded as the measuring stick in the class.  Athletic, skilled, instinctive, and dominant when engaged, Ayton has tremendous potential and ability to make a high major impact at the collegiate level and beyond.  A potential lottery pick talent with hard work, Ayton controls his own destiny on the hardwood.

2 – MICHAEL PORTER JR. – SF – TOLTON CATHOLIC (MO) – MO KAN ELITE
A highly talented, skilled, and focused talent with the ability to score at each level, Porter could easily look and be the top player in the country on any given day.  Equipped with a long wiry frame and an advanced skill package that has delivered consistently dominant results, Porter is headed to Washington where Coach Romar and the Huskies stand to be the beneficiaries of his high level ability and potential.

3 – MOHAMED BAMBA – C – WESTTOWN SCHOOL (NY) – PSA CARDINALS
A gifted talent physically in that Bamba has a ridiculous reach (7’8” by some accounts) and size that makes for an imposing and potentially dominant interior prospect defensively.  He brings to mind former NBA star Dikembe Mutombo in some aspects of the way he moves on the court and his potential upside defensively.  Still developing in all facets, Mamba can run the floor, finish around the basket, clean the glass, swat everything, etc.  This past spring he showed flashes of an improving mid-range game and nice hands that bode well for his continued development.  A high impact high ceiling talent who is far from a finished prospect.

4 – TREVON DUVAL – PG – IMG ACADEMY (FL) – WE R 1
Regarded by many as the most college ready at this stage in terms of making an immediate impact, Duval is explosive and dominant in all facets and he’s only getting better.  He can break down opposing guards off the bounce, score in traffic, hit the mid-range jumper, and rip the nets from long range.  He has vision, a solid feel for the court, and an overall big time floor game that makes for a dominant talent potentially on both ends of the court.  Still on the board, Duval is legit in all facets and his best basketball may very well lie ahead.

5 – WENDELL CARTER – PF – PACE ACADEMY (GA) – CP3
Everything with Carter is about his upside and potential which is enormous by most accounts and he pairs that with a high IQ and intangible laced floor game that contributes at a high level both inside the box score and in areas that don’t show up.  He’s strong around the block and he can finish with his back to the basket and facing up in a variety of creative ways.  His range can at times extend out to the perimeter but he’s at his best inside 12-15 feet where he can attack and finish, collect and score, and at times create with his vision and awareness.  A blue chip talent whose best basketball lies ahead, Carter like the others on this list really controls his entire future on the hardwood.  He will get whatever he puts in.

6 – KEVIN KNOX II – F – TAMPA CATHOLIC (FL) – E1T1 ELITE
A young and potentially explosive wing talent, Knox has scary upside.  He has size, length, big time athleticism, and a versatile scoring package that he utilizes to finish at each level.  He can extend his range beyond the arc, break down opposing defenders and score in half court sets, punish the rims with dunks, and he has the versatility and floor game to play above the rim both offensively and defensively.  He has solid timing on the defensive end making him disruptive at times in altering and blocking shots and offensively there’s so much clay to mold into a high level scoring talent that he may very well have some of the most upside on this board.  Far from a finished product, Knox has the potential to be special at the next level with hard work.

7 – GARY TRENT JR. – SG – PROLIFIC PREP (CA) – HOWARD PULLEY
A strong, physical, athletic scoring wing who can take over the game at any time, Trent doesn’t always get his just due as he can make it look too easy at times.  He has size, skill, and a smooth stroke that he utilizes to rip the nets from beyond the arc off the dribble or in a catch and shoot capacity.  Add to that a stellar pull up off the dribble, an ability to finish in transition, and the versatility to score in traffic and you have arguably the most lethal pure scoring threat in the class and he does it in smooth fashion with high levels of consistency.

8 – BRANDON MCCOY – C – CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC (CA) – CAL SUPREME
Far from a finished product, McCoy started playing late in middle school and he’s taken gigantic steps forward in a short period of time.  Equipped with excellent physical tools in terms of size, strength, length, agility, and athleticism, McCoy is further along defensively than offensively making for a disruptive force altering and/or blocking shots as well as cleaning the glass.  On the offensive end of the court he can run the floor, finish with either hand around the basket and he’s shown an ability to face up and knock down the jumper as well.  An unpolished gem of a prospect at this stage, McCoy has a huge ceiling and he’s just getting started.

9 – MITCHELL ROBINSON – C – CHALMETTE (LA) – PRO SKILLS
A Western Kentucky commit who formerly was verbally pledged to Texas A&M, Robinson is another upside talent on this list and probably the one we went back and forth on the most before placing him here.  He has a 7 foot plus frame with a huge wingspan that he pairs with solid athleticism and an ability to run the floor to make for a very intriguing prospect.  Offensively he’s far from a finished product but he can elevate and finish around the basket and he has the ability to run the floor and finish in transition as well.  Defensively he can be a significantly disruptive force around the basket as he has solid timing and the size to become a high impact shot blocker.  Mix in decent rebounding instincts and feel and a feeling that he is far from a finished product and it’s easy to see why he intrigues most with his high ceiling and potential.

10 – HAMIDOU DIALLO – SG – PUTNAM SCIENCE (NY) – NY RENS
The classic athletic slashing wing, Diallo is a highlight reel waiting to happen and he can posterize defenses in transition or half court sets in embarrassing fashion.  Equipped with a long wiry frame, explosive hops, and advanced quickness, Diallo pairs his physical gifts with instincts and skill to make for a dangerous open court wing on the hardwood.  He finishes in creative ways around the basket and whether it be tip dunks, alley-oops, runners, mid-range looks, and even the occasional jumper, Diallo will find a way to put the ball in the basket creatively.  One of the most exciting prospects to watch in the class, if not the most exciting, Diallo is just scratching the surface of his potential.
